Mavis Staples, then and now

Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Mavis Staples is a crossover singer par excellence. In her 60-plus years on the road she first sang gospel, pop, and soul with the Staples Singers before continuing her legendary career as a solo artist. The photo below shows Pervis, Pops, Cleotha, and Mavis Staples in 1956, the period covered by The Staples Singers: The Best of the Vee-Jay Years.

Filmed backstage at Chicago’s Civic Opera House last December, this clip shows Staples rehearsing the Band’s 1968 song “The Weight” with Nick Lowe and Wilco.

Staples also did a memorable gig singing spirituals at NPR's Tiny Desk Concerts.

So funny... This teenager (who has obviously never been to a vinyl or thrift store) tries to comprehend an alien artifact presented by her father. "Why would you put a needle on it? That just doesn't make sense!"
