Off-the-beaten-path covers of two pop classics

Here is Amy Winehouse, nailing "Girl from Ipanema"—the second most recorded song in pop history. What a voice! If the bossa nova bug done bit you, try out Stan Getz & Luiz Bonfa: Jazz Samba Encore! Getz played on the original release, which brought the Brazilian craze to the U.S. in the '60s.
Heloisa Eneida Menezes Paes Pinto, the "girl from Ipanema." The song turns 50 this year.
Voted the No. 1 pop song of all time by Time and Rolling Stone in 2000, The Beatles' "Yesterday" is also the one with the most covers. (Actually, Paul McCartney both wrote the tune and performed it solo on Help). Here's jazz great Oscar Peterson with a very bossa nova–esque instrumental version.
Ever wish you could pluck a guitar like James Taylor does on "You've Got a Friend" or "You Can Close Your Eyes" from Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon? Just mosey on over to jamestaylor.com for a free lesson!

  1. Thank you for an enchanting time. Amy Winehouse's voice is too thin and high; I miss Astrud Gilberto. And Amy's scat! Where is Ella when you need her? Also, the percussion is too loud. Better the Sinatra version, with the composer, that came up on You Tube after.
On the pastiche of Yesterdays, the ones I wanted to hear more of were Ray Charles, for the stormy emotion he promised in his voice, and Sinatra again. Did you hear the little break in his voice on the word "shadow"? It is an example of the subtle way he had to project regret--part of his artistry that I did not appreciate till I grew older.
I shall be humming all day.

    1. NPR did a program one time on how masterful Sinatra was at conveying the emotion of Corcovado.

We have a DVD of his 1960 tv specials coming along before long, which I enjoyed a lot.

  2. While we are talking covers and The Beatles...anyone see the Arctic Monkeys cover "Come Together" at the Olympics opening ceremonies yesterday? Quite the performance!

  3. What do you think of the study, which I read about on Yahoo, that has scientists claiming they have proof that pop music is simpler and louder than ever before? My reaction is "Sleeping Beauty woke up".
