Elvis Presley: history buff

Well, at least when he was a schoolkid. This card with his sig turned up when a librarian was chucking some old volumes. (The book was a bio of Andrew Jackson.) At auction, this fragment of The King's youthful pursuits fetched a cool $7500. Below, Elvis in 7th grade, Tupelo, Mississippi. Just 10 years until Jailhouse Rock!! (A special edition, no less.)

  1. What a gem! He had a long way to go in a short time, as you noted. There are two types of people in the world: 1) Those who know Elvis (and probably only the late era Elvis) by hearsay, and assume he was merely a hack or media creation. And 2) Those who've heard his best work and realize that he was one of the best performers---rock or otherwise---of the 20th century. Then again, I'm a fanatic, as is the rest of my family….Elvis can still have that effect after all these years…

  2. The Elvis above is the one I'll always remember, frozen in my mind. Absolutely groundbreaking during that era!! I must say, however, I wouldn't pay THAT much for anything:) Long live rock and roll...

What a funny looking kid! Seems almost like he was engaged in a bout of fisticuffs before that photo was taken.

    1. He looks like Bill Maher to me ... not really like himself. But photos can be deceiving.

  4. I agree with Wilhelm, $7500 for a library book insert, WOW!!!! TOO MUCH!!!
But still any Elvis artifact is pretty sweet in my book!!!

  5. $7,500 for that little ol' card with a signature?? Oh the many things I could buy for $7,500.

  6. ...But can we talk about how many times Charlene had to renew that book?

  7. In your post the kids are looking funny. Thanks a lot to share this.
