Repurposed art: pennies & Little Readers

Venus Dreams, 1963; oil on penny.
The website of artist Jacqualine Lou Skaggs has an engrossing series of images painted on found, discarded pennies. What a piquant fate for this useless coin!

If you cringe at mordant humor, don't click through to Bob Staake's collection of Bad Little Children's Books ("Satire, Humor and Visual Parody of Classic Children's Books From the 1940s Through 1960s"). Here are a few of the relatively tame ones.

If you're looking for children's titles in the non-ironical vein, I recommend snapping up Brave Irene and/or The Amazing Bone by the late, great William Steig (below). Ditto our titles by and about Roald Dahl.

  1. Those children's book titles are priceless. "Bukowski for Kids" almost made me do a spit-take.

  2. These are great! "Brave Irene" is an absolute stunner. Also, I rarely pick up pennies, but I'd imagine I wouldn't leave those on the ground:)

  3. HAHAHAHA I just clicked through Bob Staake's collection of Bad Little Children's Books, hands down my favorite ones are "Dead Whales Can't Wave Back," "Bukowski for Kids" and "If You Give a Cyclops a Kitten" I want all of these prints on t-shirts.

  4. The Bad Little Children's Books are fantastic! It makes me think of Avenue Q and using puppets for not-so-child-friendly humor. It's definitely hilarious, though.

I have to admit my favorite is "Polly Paints a Penis," which I feel awkward about. But that cover is just amazing. Second favorite, "A Good Place: To Hide the Body Parts."

    1. I second your feeling of "awkwardness", Molly. There are several that verge on the distasteful-- those pedophiliac references, especially.

  5. There is just something about "God is Great: So How Come He Gave Me and Bobby Crossed Eyes?" that goes right to my funny bone. I think it's the artwork.
