John Lennon's early days

John Lennon was born on today’s date in the year 1940, in Liverpool. I recently watched Nowhere Boy, a very affecting re-creation of a few pivotal years from his youth, when he got to know his mother (he was raised by his aunt Mimi), had trouble in school (he was very cheeky), and started forming a band with Paul and George. Below, John horsing around with Mimi and in a rare photo with his mum.
This is a nice video collage set to one of the best songs John wrote while a Beatle (others are "Norwegian Wood," "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away," and "Strawberry Fields Forever").
Want to re-visit Beatlemania? Get yourself the Beatles 2014 Wall Calendar or The Rough Guide to the Beatles: The Stories, The Songs, The Solos. And John Lennon: The Illustrated Biography won't bring him back, but it will help us remember why he was so loved. I haven't seen the BBC film Lennon Naked, but it certainly doesn't look like a hagiography!
What would be his birthday wish? To give peace a chance?

  1. Is it just my ignorance of musical instruments, but does it look as if southpaw Paul is holding a right-handed guitar?

    1. His father gave him a trumpet for his 14th birthday, but Paul traded it in for that guitar, his first. It's indeed right-handed, but strung upside-down. (More about its history is found here.)

Probably that someone would still need him, would still feed him, when he’s 74.
